The mark of a truly good whisky is its versatility to blend well with ingredients of all kind. So, we put our favourite Johnnie Walker whisky to the test by pairing it with the many flavours of India.
What happened next was a delightful exploration of cocktails concocted with ingredients sourced from across the country. From the very popular apricot jam of Ladkh to bimbli juice from the Andaman Islands, here are a few whisky cocktails India has to offer.
Ladakh
Ladakh is home to some of the sweetest varieties of apricots in the world. We take freshly made apricot jam from Ladakh and add it to this cocktail to give you a sweet and refreshing drink.
Ingredients
45ml Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky
1 spoon apricot jam
5ml peach syrup
Lime juice from 1 wedge
Soda, to top off
Mint sprig, for garnish
Method
Mix the apricot jam and peach syrup into flowing consistency.
Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.
Pour the whisky and add the jam-syrup.
Top with soda.
Balance with a lime squeeze and discard lime.
Garnish with a mint sprig.
Mizoram
One of the hottest chillies in the world, Naga chilli aka Bhut Jolokia aka Ghost Chillis come from Mizoram in Nagaland. The locals have taken this homegrown produce and infused it with nectar to create a somewhat smoky-sweet honey with a fruity aftertaste. This honey is used to give this cocktail it’s unique sweet, spicy flavour.
Ingredients
45ml Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky
15ml Naga chilli honey
Tonic, to top up
Star anise/rosemary, for garnish
Method
Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.
Pour the whisky.
Tap rosemary and place inside ice cubes like a tree.
Add the chilli honey syrup
Fill the glass with syrup.
Place star anise over ice cubes.
Andaman Islands
Using bimbli and orange syrup, along with black salt and edible flowers, this cocktail embodies the tropical ambience of the Andaman Islands.
Ingredients
45ml Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky
15ml Bimbli & orange syrup
Ginger ale, to top up
Small pinch of black salt
Star fruit & edible flowers for garnish
Method
Fill a collins glass with ice cubes.
Pour the whisky.
Add the orange syrup.
Fill the glass with ginger ale.
Balance with a lime squeeze & discard lime.
Garnish with a pinch of black salt and flowers.
Jaisalmer
Capturing the essence of Jaisalmer’s khatta meetha swad, this cocktail uses tamarind syrup with whisky to give you a cocktail that has a piquant flavour.
Ingredients
45ml Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky
15ml tamarind syrup
Tonic, to top up
Amchur powdered half rim/sweet lime wheel
Method
Fill the glass with ice cubes.
Pour the whisky in a collins glass.
Add the tamarind syrup.
Fill the glass with tonic
Balance with a lime squeeze & discard lime.
Garnish with a sweet lime wheel.
Johnnie Ginger

Ginger ale, to top off
Ginger slice & star anise, for garnish
Method
Fill the glass with ice cubes.
Pour the whisky.
Top it up with ginger ale.
Rim the glass with a ginger slice.
Place the ginger slice over ice.
