So, even as you start prepping and take the team head on, step back into old times and remember what it was that made gully cricket so inspirational.
Less Me And More We
Borrowing its name from the lanes or ‘gullies’ it is played in, the game is majorly improvised.
The first thing that gully cricket teaches us is the importance of building the right team. It isn’t always about picking the best batsman or the fastest bowler, it’s about giving an opportunity to your friends and getting everyone to give their best shot. And if you wish to take on the RCB boys, the only way you can win is if all of you’ll walk hand in hand as a team of equals.
Adjust Your Focus
With no set rules and no fixed equipment, we’re sure you remember using tennis balls and random objects as wickets. With no real bails, bats with twine coming off at the handles, stones and shoes marking creases, gully cricket taught us to adjust while still having our head in the game.
Be Smart, Be Brave
Remember playing gully cricket and always having the fear of breaking a window or losing your ball? Or even a sudden rain spell or bad roads that would spoil the entire game? But as kids, we always worked our way around, didn’t we? Rules were altered and so were venues. And if you were lucky enough, you even ended up having an entire ‘gully’ to yourself! Playing in the Royal Challenge Bold League is pretty much the same. Expect a ton of googlies, nail-biters and moments where your team needs to make quick, bold moves to help you change the game.
Respect – Give It To Get It
It wasn’t always enough for us to play amongst ourselves. We always tried to up the ante by challenging the older ‘dadas’ of the area for an afternoon match. There were definitely days when you lost and ones where your team surprised them by putting up a tough fight! Earning the senior team’s respect was an exhilarating experience for most of us. And who knows what awaits you at the RCBL!
