Is It a Bird? Is It a Plane? No! It is The Flying Trapeze!!
Inspired by a(n) (un)healthy dose of Cartoon Network, a recurring childhood dream of mine was to run away and join the circus, and every once in a while, when I got into trouble at home, I’d threaten to do it (an imaginary stick with an imaginary potli tied to its end, slung on my shoulder). So when I heard of the new circus-themed terrace top lounge in town, I had to head over there.
Caged in an intimidating red metal exterior, a climb up the stairs to this 5th Block Koramangala delight transports you to another place and time. With huge red curtains mimicking the Big Top circus tent, the ambiance is replete with decor elements in the style of P T Barnum’s Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, a truly exciting blend of kitschy Victoriana and 1920’s pop art.
Spread across a roofed deck and an outdoor seating area, TFT is perfect to enjoy Bangalore’s unpredictable weather and some breathtaking food and beverages. And just in case the decor isn’t evocative enough, there’s a cotton candy machine that operates every evening. Need I say more?
Potato Pattice
Alliteration makes all things good, as do panko-packed potato patties with a Parsi-spice punch. Pop one in with some spicy green chutney, and let these little tater tots of sorts take you places in their opening act!
A Few of My Favourite Things
True to its name, this vodka-based cocktail has the happy mingling of pineapple, orange and peach, which tingles your taste buds and transports you to a world beyond raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.
Glass Noodle Spring Roll
These little slices of the classic spring roll are stuffed with pickled vegetables. The crackling of the coating and a fiery red dipping sauce really shoot through the roof of your mouth and spiral like a flying trapeze.
Betel Leaf Chicken
Served on a slab of mottled stone, these little parcels of chicken mince wrapped in betel leaves and fried, are succulent and moist. The surprise tangy aftertaste makes you Twist and Shout (and if you didn’t see what I did there, Let It Be!) and leaves (forgive me, I can’t help myself!) you wanting more!
Mudslide
With all the comforting smoothness of Baileys and a generous dollop of fresh cream, this cocktail is halfway between dessert and a bear hug on the morning after some serious merrymaking.
tl;dr? I GOAT You
The magic of the food and drink at The Flying Trapeze can compare to The Greatest Show on Earth (whose aesthetic it pays tribute to), and makes you sit back and say...
