Just a 10-minute drive from the Mahalaxmi racecourse is a different kind of derby set up. Situated in Kamala Mills, everyone’s new favourite party hub, Derby Resto-bar makes its presence felt with a quirky new theme.

If you haven’t guessed already, it has a “derby” theme, quite literally. You can see this through their decor, food and signature cocktails. 

Signature Cocktails
All their signature cocktails get their names from popular racehorses who’ve had some of the finest performances in racing history

Secretariat
This cocktail is named after an American Thoroughbred racehorse who in 1973 became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. It’s a Gordon’s gin-based cocktail mixed with pink peppercorn, watermelon, raspberries, tonic and garnished with smoked rosemary. With ingredients like that, it sure did seem like a sweet, smoky cocktail but I’d not be ordering a second one because there are plenty of others on the menu to try.

Domination
Next up was a drink named after another racecourse beauty called Domination who was the star at the Royal Ascot 2014. This cocktail is a Johnnie Walker Red Label based drink, layered with spiced pineapple, star anise, Peychaud and Angostura bitters. The whisky notes of this cocktail were quite dominant, if you know what I mean and it seemed like a winner to me.

Food Factor
Their food menu is a mix of cuisines including Asian, continental and also elements of Southern American cuisine

Chicken Waffle
Fried chicken and waffle is a classic favourite among the derby-loving southern Americans. I was quite happy to see this dish on the menu. This was the first time I’d taste a savoury waffle and it did not disappoint. The chicken was just the right amount of juicy and well-coated. It was served on mini bite-sized waffles and drizzled with a spicy chilli glaze. For me, this was definitely the winning dish of the night.

Fresh Greens And Ricotta Dim Sums
Tis’ the season of warm dim sums and the menu had plenty of options. So, I figured, it was a good choice. This veggie dim sum was filled with fresh greens like spinach and kale and had a good mix of ricotta and corn that added a delicious twist to it.

Chocolate Chiffon Cake
The award for the best dressed at the derby goes to this Chocolate Chiffon Cake for sure! Let me tell you why. The dessert came to the table looking like a white chocolate sphere topped with flower petals. It was served with a side of piping hot salted caramel sauce that would be poured on the cake.

Drooling yet?

What happened next, was that the server poured the hot salted caramel sauce over the sphere to melt and reveal a sinfully chocolate cake inside. Tada! It didn’t take long for us to dig into a bowl full of sugary goodness that might have been a tad bit extra sweet, but I’m still not complaining. 

tl;dr? I GOAT You
Whether you’re heading to the racecourse for derby season or not, this is one derby that you should be checking out soon.
