Boman: The only virus that scared us back then Skip to main content
Boman Irani’s life journey is just the inspiration we need in our lives.

A man of many talents, Boman Irani is one of the finest Indian actors that Bollywood is blessed with. We know him for his versatile performances in Bollywood movies like 3 Idiots, Munnabhai MBBS, Housefull, Jolly LLB, Sanju and Don, among others. But his road to the silver screen has not been an easy one (to say the least). After all, how many other actors can you think of who debuted at the age of 44? Going by Bollywood industry standards, most would think of it as a receding time in an actor’s career. But like they say, ‘talent kab tak chhup sakta hai janaab?’

The 60-year-old actor was born posthumously on 2nd December 1959. His dad used to run a wafer shop back then which Boman’s mom had to take over after her husband’s demise. He soon started with school but had to struggle with speech and learning disabilities. But, his mom was a constant pillar of support who helped him through these challenges and helped gain his confidence back.

During college days, even though Boman took science he was very keen in arts and also took part in theatre. He had a passion for cinema from an early age but little did he know that some years down the line he would be able to follow his passion and get paid for it.
After college got over, Boman took up a job as a room service attendant and then as a waiter at the Taj Hotel to contribute his bit to the family. But, after his mother met with an accident, Boman had to start sitting at the family shop after quitting his job. And, 14 years went by just like that.

During this phase, he got married and had kids. It was his wife who inspired him to try something different to fill the void he kept feeling in his life. Boman then got into photography. He started with making about 25 rupees per photo but his go-getter attitude and his creative talent soon helped him to earn 300 dollars per picture. He went on to bag his first big project as the official photographer for the World Cup of Boxing which happened in Mumbai.

His photography business was doing well until Shiamak Davar walked into his studio one day and eventually got him an audition for an advertisement. He also performed in a lot of plays after that and did a short film. His life turned upside down when Vidhu Vinod Chopra saw a clip of his film and offered him 2 lakh rupees as an advance to be in his next movie. This is how Munnabhai M.B.B.S. happened and Boman grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

After Munnabhai, there was no looking back and Boman did hit movies like 3 Idiots, Don, Dostana, Main Hoon Na and many more. He created his own niche in an industry even though he was a complete outsider and had no Godfathers. For the movie 3 Idiots, he earned the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor and IIFA Award for Best Performance in a negative role.

Over the years, Boman’s spontaneous good humour and charismatic personality have led him to be part of many important events as a keynote speaker and anchor award shows. He has made us believe age is truly just a number and you can achieve everything you wish to if you have the passion in your heart and fire in your belly.

Thank you for all the entertainment. We wish you all the luck and hope you continue to charm us with your performances always.
