Perfect Home bartending

Perfect Home bartending

Want to bring home the wonder of cocktails and neat whiskeys in beautiful rock glasses to the comfort of your home? Or are you simply taken by the sophistication a home bar brings to your interiors? Whatever your reason, setting up a home bar need not be a daunting task if you follow the golden rule- take it slow. Rather than going all out and spending on a full bar at one go, slowly building your bar stocks piece by piece isn't just good for your wallet, but also helps you create a personalized bar you'll love to have. Because even the best of spirits, when left untouched on the shelf turn drab. All you need in a beginner’s home bar are basic glassware, essential alcohols and the right tools. Master these first and then experiment and add to create a truly masterful place for your spirit to soar.

The buzz

While it may be tempting to get one of each of all the booze and liqueurs in the world, stick to basics and favorites when starting out. The important aspect is storing what you have in appropriately sized and safe shelving, away from direct sunlight and ideally close to a refrigerator. Here are a few that work well by themselves as well as in cocktails:

Vodka- Smirnoff No. 21

Whiskey- McDowell’s No. 1

Blended Scotch- Johnnie Walker Black Label

Bourbon

Rum

Tequila

Gin

Vermouth

Syrups: Simple syrup

Garnish/ Citrus- Limes, Lemons, Oranges

Mixers: Soda, Tonic, Ginger Ale

Bitters

The Tools

While specialized equipment like ice machines is available, all you really need are a few simple shakers and stirrers and knives to make even the most complex cocktails. Here's a list of things to always have at your bar:

Ice bucket

Bar spoon

Muddler

Jigger

Corkscrew

Citrus press

Cocktail shaker

Strainer

Ice molds

Paring knife

The Mix

Now that you have the essentials at hand, get down a few simple cocktails you can whip up with the above whenever you need to impress or de-stress. Here are a few that are easy to make:

Black & Soda

Mango Collins

Johnnie Ginger

Whiskey Sour

Bloody Mary

Old fashioned

Gin & Tonic

Vodka & Soda

Martini

Daiquiri

Now that you've got the home bar spruced, get swinging and throw a cocktail party for your friends to show it off.
