‘Maska’ Movie Review - Because A Little Butter Makes Everything Better!
When the going gets tough, just Netflix! Seriously, all these online streaming platforms helps us get that much-needed break from life.
Netflix’s recent release is one movie that is like a breath of fresh air. Well, okay, nothing about this movie is hatke, but I think that’s why we love it. It feels so familiar that it is comforting. Just like the warm and moist maska pav.
Starring actors like Manisha Koirala, Javed Jaffrey and fresh faces like Prit Kamani, Shirley Setia and Nikita Dutta (Yes, the actress from Kabir Singh) this film is sure to make you smile and warm your heart.
I’m going to give you a gist of the movie, so if you haven’t watched it, do watch it and come back to read the review, okay?
The scene opens, with Diana (Manisha) gifting Rumi (Prit) his dad’s shoes for his birthday. But Rumi is not able to fit in it. Diana is a typical Parsi mother who pampers her son and is very proud of their culture. She runs an Irani cafe in South Bombay and dreams that the legacy will be continued once Rumi is ready to sit behind the counter.
Rumi’s life till date has been chalked down by his mother. He never dreamt of being anything else and hasn’t found himself yet. One day at a Parsi party, an aunty compliments Rumi for his dance performance by saying “you should be an actor, just like Boman Irani” and that seed of thought was now Rumi’s dream.
He enrolls himself in acting school, falls in love with Mallika (Nikita Dutta) and sets on the acting journey. He works really hard but it doesn’t work out. So, a director tells him that if he had the finances, he could cast him as a lead. That’s when Rumi decides to go back home with an agenda i.e selling the cafe.
And then enters Persis (Shirley Setia) who is like a path of enlightenment to Rumi. In the movie, we see Persis writing a book on Irani cafes and capturing stories in Rustom’s cafe. She manages to capture every beautiful story. Stories that make room in your heart and stay forever. Meanwhile, Rumi is following in his father’s footsteps and makes the legendary maska pav.
He sees people around him smile and observes the twinkle in their eye whenever they take a bite of the food prepared by him.
However, he’s still adamant about selling the cafe.
As the movie unfolds, he realizes his mistake and decides not to sell his father's legacy - Rustom's Cafe.
See, I told you it’s a simple story. But it does teach you a few lessons, doesn’t it? Sometimes, life is simple and we complicate it. And sometimes, if our dreams fail, it’s okay. We can always start over again.
This movie will surely leave an imprint on your mind for a while. So, if you’re wondering “aaj kya dekhe?” I suggest you sit back, relax and savour the pause with Maska while sipping on Black Dog Packaged Drinking Water.
