Ditch The Calories, Not The Cocktail With These Hacks

Vanessa Luis
No need to feel guilty every time you sip on a cocktail now.

Accommodating a cocktail in your diet can be a real struggle, especially when you’re counting your calories. Yea, I can almost hear you all agree in a synchronised groan. Drinks O-clock is a tricky time.

Cocktails can be heavy calorie bombs unless you actually know what goes in your drink.

A mega-sized, fruity Margarita that easily runs over 500 calories can be made in under 200 if you follow some simple hacks.

So, read on, we have some good news for you.

Stick to simple spirits
Liquor might not solve all your problems but it’s worth a shot. What I’m trying to say is that simple liquors or spirits like vodka, gin, Scotch or whisky have zero carbs and don’t load up the calorie count either. So, choose a standard spirit as the base alcohol for your cocktail and avoid high-calorie ones like cream and sugar-based liqueurs. I’m looking at you, you delicious bottles of Irish cream and schnapps.

Mind your mixers
Now that we’ve established liquors are not the real culprits, then who is? *Raises finger and points to the mixers* Mixers in all its forms, sugary sodas or processed juices add to the calorie count in a big way! You’re better off sticking to fresh juices in small quantities (mummy was right, after all, juices are good) for flavour or club soda (which has zero calories, yay!) to add some fizz to your cocktail.

Find your flavours
More the ingredients, the more will be the calories but that doesn’t mean you need to stick to something as simple as a vodka-soda every..single..time. Right swipe on flavours that don’t bring along any baggage, like tea and espresso or spices and herbs. Or how about some muddled berries and sliced jalapeño?

Incredible infusions
Every wondered why flavour-infused alcohol exists? I discovered using infused spirits like Smirnoff Orange vodka or Smirnoff Apple vodka in your cocktail adds that flavoured punch without having to load it up with a sugary juice. Cool eh?

Pick your portions
This one’s a no brainer, just as the plot of Season 8 of Game Of Thrones. Bigger the portion, more the calories. So, make a smaller-sized cocktail, because a Mar-teenie can be just as enjoyable.

That’s all folks, you’re now ready to make some low-calorie cocktails! *Does the happy dance*
