Home delivery of alcohol has been in consideration for quite some time across the country. Given the circumstances today, some state governments have permitted for liquor sale via online medium or home delivery, keeping in mind the need for social distancing and enabling supply of products and services to consumers directly to their homes. While the service is not prevalent across the country, the regulations for alcohol home delivery vary from state to state, wherein this option is available.
So, if you are planning to order alcohol online, here are things you should know about the home delivery guidelines in your respective states:
Maharashtra: Home delivery of alcohol is available throughout Maharashtra except in containment zones. Retailers are providing doorstep delivery of alcohol to people with a valid liquor permit. For the permit application process of purchase, possession, and consumption of foreign liquor in Maharashtra, you can log on to https://aaplesarkar.mahaonline.gov.in/
Jharkhand: Swiggy and Zomato are both, delivering alcohol in the state of Jharkhand. Authorized retailers are registered on the app as per verification of licenses and the required documents. Zomato and Swiggy are also taking strict measures like mandatory age verification and user authentication for delivery of liquor at home. There is also a capping quantity to ensure a customer does not order alcohol above the prescribed limit as per the state law.
Odisha: Days after launching home delivery of alcohol in Jharkhand, Swiggy, and Zomato started the service in Odisha as well. Liquor delivery firm, HipBar has also commenced doorstep delivery of alcohol in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack. The HipBar app lists all the liquor shops in these areas, and allows you to pick one, purchase items from that shop, and then delivers these items to your doorstep for a fee. They will begin operations in other major cities of the state soon.
Chattisgarh: An online portal has been set up by the state-run Chhattisgarh State Marketing Corporation Limited to enable home delivery of alcohol in the state. Customers can place their orders on the CSMCL Online app and get their alcohol home delivered.
Punjab: Doorstep delivery of alcohol is available in the state through retailers.
West Bengal: The state initially started with home delivery through the BEVCO website and app. https://excise.wb.gov.in/eRetail/Page/eRetail_Login.aspx. Since then, food delivery apps Swiggy and Zomato have started home delivery of alcohol in Kolkata recently along with HipBar. Spencer’s Retail has also begun home delivery of alcohol to eligible customers through online ordering.
