Storing scotch isn't as simple as shoving it on a wine rack or on a window sill.

If you are a true whisky lover, you would want the last drop of your whisky to taste as good as the first. And trust us that requires some serious doing. But before you get alarmed, here’s the good news! Whisky preserved well can last for even a lifetime if you do it right.

Use this guide to preserve the bursting flavour of your favourite Johnnie Walker whisky and enjoy it without any loss of quality.

1. Don’t Expose It to Direct Sunlight
Place your whisky collection in a dark area of your home to maintain the quality of your whisky and keep it out of direct sunlight. That’s because UV rays from the sunlight not only dull the colour of the whisky but also turn its taste rancid.

2. Don’t Freeze It
While this may seem like a logical thing to do, what most of us don’t realise is storing any spirits in the freezer dulls the flavour. If you pour a glass of whisky after taking it out straight from the freezer it won’t taste as good, unless it is the White Walker whisky by Johnnie Walker, which is meant to be enjoyed cold.

3. Position It Upright
Many people bring the image of wine cellars in their mind (where the wine bottles are stored horizontally) to store their whisky. But hey, what works for wine does NOT work for whisky because wine has relatively low alcohol percentage, so, storing it horizontally does not affect the cork. But your whisky bottle must always stand up so it does not disintegrate the cork stopper over time.

4. Keep Corks Moist
Now that storing your bottles of whisky horizontally is out of the question, how may you still keep the cork moist? Well, the trick is to simply flip the bottle sideways for an hour or so to re-wet the cork once or twice a year.

5. What About Open Bottles?
Because of the air to liquid ratio in the bottle, your whisky may begin to experience oxygenation as it begins to reach a quarter of its original volume once opened and stored. It’s best to transfer the contents in a smaller bottle with an acceptable stopper to reduce this risk.
