A Tour Around The World With Whisky Cocktails

Just like every country has its own signature dish, it has its favourite whisky cocktail too. By using regional whiskies – be it rye, bourbon or scotch – bartenders around the globe have created drinks that fascinate the afficionados.
Rob Roy, USA
Made primarily with whisky and vermouth, the Rob Roy was invented at the Waldorf hotel in New York in 1894. A Scotch version of the classic Manhattan, it was named in honour of the premiere of ‘Rob Roy’, an operetta based upon Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor. Just like the Manhattan, it can be made, ‘dry’, ‘sweet’, or ‘perfect’ depending upon the amount of vermouth in it. Whip it up in a jiffy for your happy hours using the recipe below.
Ingredients:
60 ml Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Whisky
20 ml sweet vermouth
3 dashes angostura bitters
Cherries, for garnish
Method:
Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass over ice and stir.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a speared cherry.
Maple Whisky Sour, Canada
Canada is obsessed with its maple syrup. And at times, it goes beyond the waffles and the pancakes. Maple syrup cocktails are perfect for fall drinking. Add a dash of Canadian whiskey to the mix and you get a drink that taps into your taste buds. Here’s how you can create Canada’s take on the classic whisky sour using scotch.
Ingredients:
30 ml Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Whisky
30 ml pure maple syrup
30 ml fresh lemon juice
Maraschino cherry and lemon peel, for garnish
Method:
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake vigorously and strain into your glass over fresh ice.
Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a lemon peel.
The Hobnail, Hong Kong
Created by bartender Beckaly Franks and served at The Pontiac in Hong Kong, the Hobnail is a well-balanced mix of scotch and citrus. Smoky scotch is tempered with some bitter amaro and a splash of spicy ginger syrup to make this smooth ‘scotch-tail’.
Ingredients:
45 ml Johnnie Walker Black Label Whisky
20 ml ginger syrup
20 ml lemon juice
1 tsp averna amaro
2 dashes angostura bitters
Candied orange, for garnish
Method:
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
Shake, and strain over fresh ice and garnish with the candied orange.
The Whiskey Ginger, Ireland
Call it a Whiskey Ginger or a Johnnie Ginger, this Irish concoction is easy to mix and refreshingly delicious. A nice sipper for any time of the year, the recipe originally combines Irish whiskey with the spice of a ginger ale. Ingredients:
45 ml Johnnie Walker Red Label Whisky
180 ml ginger ale
A squeeze of lime juice
Lime wedge, for garnish
Method:
Fill a highball glass with cubed ice.
Add Johnnie Walker Red Label Whiskey to it, top up with ginger ale and add a squeeze of lime.
Stir lightly to combine and then, garnish with a lime wedge.
